Pier 39

Home alone and feeling nostalgic

Saturday, October 23, 2010

I've always been a fan of the Food Network TV Show Sweet Dreams by Gale Gand. Once, she featured the German Chocolate Cake and i've never forgotten it ever since. The cake is made of dark moist chocolate cake with coconut, topped with caramelized pecan or almonds. I guess i'm one of the few people who like coconut on their cake.

The idea of coconut, caramel and chocolate combined is genius! Three years ago, while having a flavor dilemma at Baskin-Robbins, i stumbled upon a German Chocolate Cake-flavored ice cream and it instantly won me over. The description reads:

Swiss Chocolate ice cream with coconut, walnut pieces, milk chocolate brownie bits and a caramel ribbon created in 1965. Available in the Midwest, Southwest, South, West and Northwest.

My mom recently got in touch with her acquaintance who used to own a bakeshop here in our town. She's been in business for more than a decade and she actually baked my sister Ela's 1st birthday cake. After all those years of ordering cakes from her, why didn't I ever asked her? She said German chocolate is very hard to acquire so she'll use a different chocolate ingredient.

Eye Candy

I can't count the number of times i've asked for a Play-Doh set for Christmas. It never came true, until i've outgrown my liking for it. Let's just say it came a decade later, but then again, it's never too late!

Pistachio Ice Cream with Gum Drops and Wafer

in less than an hour, my sister Isa and I came up with more delectable desserts

Seems like my childhood whims are coming in a decade late.

I thought my creative juices have all leaked out from my brain. Never thought i can still come out as artsy as this after all those years spent without any artsy projects. I was shocked at how i was able to beautifully catch everything in a photograph.

Life is sweet

Feline Frenzy

Remember those new-on-video-release commercials on old VHS tapes, shown before the feature presentation? That's where the story starts. I remember how my sisters and I would watch our favorite childhood movies on VHS while curled on the carpet. We saw this odd and scary (at that time) musical performace by the name of Cats. Since then, all the songs sewn together, as heard on the trailer were stuck in my head all these years. I grew up not hearing the familiar songs as time as obliterated this grand masterpiece. Late last year, i heard the same familiar tune being played on TV. CATS the musical, was hitting Manila! Tickets were pricey and i was settled to sit on the very last row, for the sake of fulfilling my childhood dream. The buzz kind of died down the whole of summer, as expenses at home were escalading. Buy the time July started, the publicity was taken to another level. It wasn't until good reviews and clips on TV were released after the first showing, did i make my first phone call to have tickets reserved. Snagged good 'ol balcony center seats <3

The 30 day wait was excrutiating. Somehow, picking the last show for the season made me think it would be a bit more special than the rest. But believe me, it wasn't. haha I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire time. It was SPECTACULAR. I found myself singing along and bobbing my head. together with the rest of the Cats! The experience is too good, i am lost for words :)

You Can Travel The World, But Nothing Comes Close to The Golden Coast

Caution: Photo Heavy Blog Ahead

October marks a distinct sense of nostalgia for my family. Three years ago, on the third week of October, my family set off for the most amazing vacation in California. Up to now, it seems like we can never get over the thrill and frenzy of being in that place and time. I mean come on, we are a family of six, with an appetite for 12! So USA, who would have thought?
First day: Shopping trip tp H&M! So here i am, posing beside a cable car in Powell&Hyde

Second day: To Serramonte!

Isa & Jose at the Muni from Serramonte

My sisters Isa & Ela at Taco Bell waiting for lunch

I took this photo of Isa one afternoon at Downtown SFO

Treating our taste buds to some Baskin-Robbins <3 we paid a visit to their store almost everyday on our last week

Failed paparazzi shot!

So I'm thinking of doing a separate blog post for Pier 39. It's so awesome it deserves a spotlight of its own!
